The exclusion zone is based off of the icon’s construction, which is built from a perfect circle with the corner of a right triangle tangent to the bottom. Using the diameter of this circle, we calculate the exclusion zone by dividing the radius by phi (the golden ratio) and use this distance as the buffer between the constructive elements.

Referencing the simple construction of the original logo, we combined geometric shapes to form a location icon and added a ‘smile,’ giving the isotype an emoji vibe – which is much more millennial and soulful 🤙
Using the diameter of the circle, we calculate the exclusion zone, ignoring the right triangle at the bottom (which visually has no weight), by dividing by phi (golden ratio).
For application on product interfaces, web and/or derivatives use the text-only version. It is designed from the Monsterrat typeface, trimming the caps to match the angle found in the icon’s ‘smile’, including that of the central ‘e’. Lastly, we eliminated the dot of the ‘i’ to create a more stable logo, avoiding any elements outside the box.
We use the x-height, ignoring the ascenders and descenders, as the golden ratio for the exclusion zone surrounding the text.
